THE MINISTRY OF TURNING KNOBS

In the 1940s, a young woman named Gladys Owens sat at a control panel in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She turned knobs. She watched gauges. She followed instructions. She didn’t know what the machines did. She didn’t know what the project was. She didn’t know she was helping shape world history. She was simply doing her job.

Fifty years later, while touring the facility as a retiree, Gladys stopped in front of a large black and white photograph. There she was — young, focused, unaware — working on the Manhattan Project. Only then did she learn what her hands had been part of.

Gladys Owens lived out a truth that Scripture has been telling us for centuries. Hebrews 11 says that the heroes of faith “did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance”. They obeyed God without seeing the full picture. They trusted Him without knowing how their small acts of faith would ripple through history.

Most of us live our lives like Gladys. We raise children. We serve quietly. We pray faithfully. We encourage someone who’s hurting. We show up, day after day, turning the knobs God has placed in front of us. And often, we have no idea what God is doing through us.

But Hebrews reminds us that God is weaving our seemingly ordinary obedience into an extraordinary story — one we may not fully see until we stand before Him. Like Gladys, we may only understand the impact of our faithfulness when we finally see the “photograph” — and get the bigger picture of what God was doing through our lives.

Gladys Owens didn’t know she was part of something world‑changing. Neither do we. But God does. And one day, He will show us the full story.
