SEALED - BUT NOT LIKE THAT

I bought a three pack of Chapstick the other day, and by the time I finally got one open, I felt like I deserved a trophy… or a manicure. First, there was the outer plastic wrap. Then the cardboard. Then each individual Chapstick was wrapped again like it was guarding state secrets.

And honestly, I’ve decided the best thing about digital entertainment is that I don’t have to try to open DVD packaging anymore. If you ever opened one of those plastic clamped, shrink wrapped, sticker sealed cases, you know exactly what I mean. Usually it felt like the movie was easier to watch than the packaging was to open.

Somewhere between layer three and four of my Chapstick battle, I found myself muttering, “Why does everything have to be sealed so tightly these days?” And right there in the middle of my wrestling match with industrial strength plastic, a thought hit me: the Bible talks about being sealed also.

But God’s sealing is nothing like the frustrating packaging we deal with. His seal isn’t meant to annoy us—it’s meant to assure us.

Scripture says,

“You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13). Paul also writes, “He has put His seal on us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee” (2 Corinthians 1:22). And again, “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30).

In the ancient world, a seal meant ownership, protection, and authenticity. A king sealed a document to say, “This is mine. This carries my authority. No one tampers with it.”

Manufacturers seal products because they’re afraid of what might happen to them. God seals us because He’s confident in what He’s doing in us.

The world seals things out of fear—fear of contamination, fear of tampering, fear of damage. But when God seals you, it’s not out of fear. It’s out of love. He marks you as His. He protects what He values. He guarantees your inheritance. And unlike Chapstick packaging, His seal isn’t temporary, disposable, or peel off able. It’s eternal.

So the next time you’re wrestling with a package that seems determined to defeat you, let it remind you of something deeper: you are sealed too—but not with plastic, glue, or shrink wrap. You are sealed with the Holy Spirit, the unbreakable mark of God’s love and ownership over your life.

And that seal isn’t meant to frustrate you. It’s meant to free you.
