The Soul Anchor [Hebrews 6:19] - November 1, 2024
What used to be Election Day in our country has become election season and it’s easy to dread election season in the United States today. It seems to get longer and longer all the time. There are endless commercials, junk mails, speeches, texts and emails asking for money, political arguments with family and friends, etc., etc. But it is important to realize that (at least so far) elections do come to an end. I sincerely hope that this year the candidates I vote for will win and that the election is over on the night of the election, November 5. Some prognosticators are predicting that we may not know the results of the election for days or weeks. Regardless of how invested you are in this election, or which day the final election results are made known and regardless of who ends up winning the presidency or a senate seat or the school board race or the dog catcher race it is important to remember some important things:
Our chief responsibility in life will still be to please God, not other people or politicians
Galatians 1:10 (NIV) “Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
When we die (whenever that will be) we will stand before God to be judged, not a congressional committee or the Supreme Court
Hebrews 4:13 (NIV) Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
The quality of our lives will be determined much more by our own personal decisions than by whatever laws are passed or court cases decided because of this election.
Matthew 25:19-21 (NIV) “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.' "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
The Great Commission will not be changed
Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV) “Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
We will be one day closer to being in heaven with Jesus and should keep our focus heavenward
Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.“
The results of this season’s election cycle will indeed change many things in our country, and it is indeed hard to soar like an eagle when you’re governed by turkeys. But it is important to remember that the really important things will not change. Let’s remember to live our lives for what matters most.
God bless,
Pastor Frank
