TIME BEHIND

The Soul Anchor [Hebrews 6:19] - February 1, 2025

I recently acquired a new electronic gadget for my bike - The Garmin Edge 820. I acquired it in the way I usually acquire electronic gadgets for my bike. It was a hand me down from my riding partner Steve when he upgraded.  The device is a little computer that attaches to the handle bars and syncs to my phone and watch to display important information when I’m riding. It shows my speed, distance, heart rate,  and miles to go before a heart attack (no it doesn’t really do that part)  Like most devices of this nature, the hardest part can be the original set up with preferences so you can use the device as you desire.

Well, unfortunately I had a bit of confusion with my setup.  One of the options was,  "Do you want to Race?”  My response was an emphatic, “NO!”  I ride for exercise and health, not adrenaline and stress. Somewhere in cyberspace my response was totally disregarded and on my first ride with my new device the only thing that I could get to appear on my screen were  images of two bicycles which I presume symbolized me and some unidentified  rider who must have been Greg LeMonde because there was also a little box displayed that said, “Time Behind” and within the first mile I was already a minute and 35 seconds behind.  It didn’t get any better from there.  Regardless of how fast I pedaled I only got farther and farther behind. By the end of my 21 mile ride it said  I was 32 minutes behind.  GRRR!  Even if it is true, I don't want to be reminded of it!  I don’t know about you but I regularly feel like I could use a couple of extra hours in the day.  It seems that for every item I check off my “To Do” list, three more get added.  “Time Behind’” certainly seems to be the direction of my life.  Around the end of January is a good time to check in and see how you are doing on any of those new year's resolutions you may have made.

Time is certainly an amazing gift from God and the Bible has a lot to say about it if we will take the time to pay attention.

First - We have a limited amount of time on this earth. James 4:14 says “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

Second - We should make the most of the time we’ve been given. Ephesians 5:15 says  “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

Third - Our goal should always be to keep pace with God’s plan for our life.  Galatians 5:25 says.  “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

Honestly, I think the main reason that it is easy to feel behind is because there is always so much we feel we want to do or should be doing. The antidote to that is to make God’s priorities the priorities in your life. In  Matthew 6:33, Jesus reminds us,

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

We serve a God who caused the sun to stand still so His purpose could be accomplished. If we focus on making his priorities our priorities we will always have time to stay in step with the Spirit and accomplish the Father’s will.

God bless,

Pastor Frank
